Found this set of Jumbo Grip Crayons in Peru where they are manufactured.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/48318364747/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Faber Castell Erasable Jumbo Grip Crayons"><img alt="Faber Castell Erasable Jumbo Grip Crayons" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48318364747_62e99481ab_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
The 24 crayons are packaged in a sturdy tray along with a small block eraser and a crayon sharpener.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/48318244546/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Faber Castell Erasable Jumbo Grip Crayons"><img alt="Faber Castell Erasable Jumbo Grip Crayons" height="640" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48318244546_13201c2bfa_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
The clear sharpener is labeled for "crayon use only", and the marks are <a href="https://flic.kr/p/2gBHCLL">fairly erasable</a> with my electric eraser.<br />

The triangular shaped jumbo crayons are easy to hold and fairly break-resistant.<br />

Their marks are on the pale side, but they are certainly capable of adding texture in mixed media applications.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-60805548262500873452017-12-29T23:02:00.001-08:002017-12-29T23:11:02.028-08:00Crayola Crayons<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/38501637145/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Crayola No 96 crayons box"><img alt="Crayola No 96 crayons box" height="375" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4731/38501637145_9b3bd9a006.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Got a new box of Crayola crayons to test and play around. Despite their popularity, I have not used them much lately myself since I prefer the softer and more pigmented Caran D'Ache Neocolor crayons. Still we always have a few sets available in most of our classrooms as a quick and easy coloring tool option.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/27602274129/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Crayola No 96 crayons box"><img alt="Crayola No 96 crayons box" height="375" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4588/27602274129_568b5e0aab.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
While obviusly all were new, they were not arranged as shown on the picture on the back of the box.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/39349575722/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Crayola No 96 crayons box"><img alt="Crayola No 96 crayons box" height="375" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4633/39349575722_beb68d4cd6.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Had to pour all six cardboard sleeves on my desk and sort them into their color families.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/38671077724/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Crayola No 96 crayons box"><img alt="Crayola No 96 crayons box" height="375" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4734/38671077724_4eab8e266f.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Also set aside the gel crayons and metallic versions.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/38671077584/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Crayola No 96 crayons box"><img alt="Crayola No 96 crayons box" height="375" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4679/38671077584_e10a7e268a.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />

Quick color sketch drawn on Deleter comic book paper. They work ok even on its smooth surface. Takes regular pressure and repeated passes to deposit enough colored wax over the paper surface. I consciously have to control my drawing pressure to avoid breaking the crayon since they are rather fragile.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-84366854600882375872017-10-31T20:47:00.001-07:002017-10-31T20:48:18.736-07:00Happy Halloween 2017<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/37364419474/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="#halloween treat table ready with custom sketchbooks and skull-topped pencils"><img alt="#halloween treat table ready with custom sketchbooks and skull-topped pencils" height="500" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4459/37364419474_794d066d36.jpg" width="375" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Traffic was light on Halloween night, so upcoming classes will get to use the extra Halloween pencils with skull-shaped cap erasers that remained by the end of the night.<br />

Also got quite a few leftover custom sketchbooks that I made by hand, so each and everyone would have a one-of-a-kind cover drawn with a white gel pen or pigmented India ink pen..B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-46536640641818168302017-05-29T08:36:00.003-07:002017-05-29T12:21:59.216-07:00Compact Sketching Kit for under 10 bucks: Casemate Sketch Diary and Pentel Sharp P207 0.7 mm mechanical pencil bundle pack<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/34918802366/in/datetaken-public/" nbsp="" title="Casemate Sketch Diary and Pentel Sharp P207 sketching kit"><img alt="Casemate Sketch Diary and Pentel Sharp P207 sketching kit" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4276/34918802366_b74c33c528.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />

Spent 3 hours last night at <a href="http://www.visitraleigh.com/includes/calendar-of-events/Bands-Bites-and-Boats-at-Bond-Park/50170/">"Bands, Bites, and Boats at Bond Park"</a> in this screened porch area.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/34529554110/in/datetaken-public/" nbsp="" title="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park"><img alt="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park" height="375" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4273/34529554110_6ef27057c6.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
There was plenty of room, overhead fans, table space, light, and art supplies for whatever crowd of kids decided to indulge in artistic endeavors as the band played and others opted to row in the evening.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/34753283922/in/datetaken-public/" nbsp="" title="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park"><img alt="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park" height="375" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4219/34753283922_cfe2c2826a.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Probably because of the lack of visibility, I had plenty of time to doodle some custom illustrations for coloring pages. For future events, we should probably put a bigger sign outside with sample pictures to entice more guests to come in.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/34105946163/in/datetaken-public/" nbsp="" title="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park"><img alt="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4267/34105946163_b96b694597.jpg" width="400" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Then in strolled Steve and asked if I could draw cartoon portraits of his party of six on a single sheet. Since I only had letter size card stock on hand, I drew him and his wife on one. their three kids on another, and their aunt on a third sheet. Happy birthday Steve! Glad I could brighten your family's evening.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/34105946113/in/datetaken-public/" nbsp="" title="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park"><img alt="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4200/34105946113_8c3c9096d8.jpg" width="400" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Then this set of twins came in and had their portraits drawn while they colored some of the dragon coloring sheets I had on the activities table. Since they allowed me to choose, I drew one as a ninja and the other as a Jedi.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/34105946103/in/datetaken-public/" nbsp="" title="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park"><img alt="Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4220/34105946103_4035ebc715.jpg" width="400" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
When i started to clean up, I offered them the pile of custom drawings I had made throughout the night to keep them busy until they can join us for some of the upcoming classes and camps at the Cary Arts Center. Also introduced the Center and passed brochures for ladies that stopped by to inquire about the nature our program for the evening. Thanks to everybody that stopped by.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-67941254127139069882016-07-09T20:43:00.001-07:002016-07-09T21:03:18.388-07:00Summer Art Camp Cartoon Portraits and Pop-Up Cards<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/27591309264/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Summer Art Camp 2016 - Aquatic Creatures"><img alt="Summer Art Camp 2016 - Aquatic Creatures" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/8/7513/27591309264_24f2fc8026.jpg" width="375" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
Just concluded a Summer Art Camp focus on "Aquatic Creatures" and another on "Merfolk and fantasy creatures". By the end of the week, we were all pretty much done with the "fish/underwater" theme. Thus students in the older group got a cartoon portrait each, some continue drawing, and others made pop-up cards.<br />

Took a different approach with this Star Wars theme birthday party, and sketched the guests as they enjoyed the activities rather that have them stand still for their cartoon portraits.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/27754974655/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Star Wars theme birthday party"><img alt="Star Wars theme birthday party" height="375" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7285/27754974655_c9ef34bca1.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
A couple of guests did spot me in the corner as I drew, so they stood still for a couple of minutes resulting in a more precise likeness.<br />
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/27754973735/in/datetaken/" nbsp="" title="Star Wars theme birthday party"><img alt="Star Wars theme birthday party" height="375" src="https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7693/27754973735_e90401a92d.jpg" width="500" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script><br />
By the end of the two hour party, each guests had at least one Jedi portrait to take home. Two girls went home with extra portraits: mermaid, fairy, and princess to round up the evening.<br />

With Pokemon being so popular, we modified the <b><span style="color: #20124d;"><a href="http://janmstore.com/products/daruma-origami">Daruma origami kit</a></span></b> to make this Pikachu model. We used 12" X 12" scrapbook paper to fold the basic body and added additional features and limbs that were secured with hot glue or Yes paste.<br />

The project is flexible enough to customize other characters and animal puppets. Thus each student can exercise their creativity and make their own unique creations.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-66245973310845405972015-06-19T05:32:00.002-07:002015-06-19T05:44:52.308-07:00Gallery of Cartoon Portraits from Birthday Party<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18232688533" title="Birthday Cartoon Portraits by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Birthday Cartoon Portraits" height="640" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3733/18232688533_bf94b047a1_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />
Had the pleasure of drawing some ninja and princess cartoon portraits for a TMNT-themed birthday party held at the <a href="http://www.kidstogethercary.org/ThePark.htm">Kids Together Park</a> this past weekend. Most boys wanted to be either a ninja or a dragon knight. The girls went with Harry Potter or Disney Princesses requests.<br />

We had a very talented group of students in our last Ninjas & Dragons Summer art Camp at the Cary Arts Center, so just wanted to share some of their original pop-up card designs.<br />

Thanks to a fellow instructor at the Art Center, we got an ample supply of wooden boards that can be used for drawing and painting.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18867393965" title="Wood board color drawings by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Wood board color drawings" height="640" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/4/3916/18867393965_bbd08dac0a_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />
They come in odd sizes since they are used breaking boards from Martial Arts classes and demonstrations. They just needed a bit of sanding on the rough edges.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18667251489" title="Summer Art Camp 2015 by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Summer Art Camp 2015" height="640" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5344/18667251489_c4a8d4a05f_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />
Colors bleed a bit, but that just simply adds to its "artsy" look.<br />

<b>Event</b>: 5 grade graduation dinner at school cafeteria 5-8 pm. Drew 40 students plus 5 adults and volunteers on 8.5" X 11" card stock with two 06 Sakura Pigma Sensei pens. Working side by side with <span style="color: red; font-weight: bold;"><a href="http://www.themelodymaker.net/About/Mimi">Melody Scruggs (Mimi the Clown)</a> </span>that I met tonight. She is very nice, and you should certainly give her a call if you need fun clean <b><span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://www.themelodymaker.net/">family entertainment services</a></span></b> in the Triangle area.<br />
<b>Speed:</b> 15 portraits/hour (though had some down time when no guest were waiting to be drawn). After drawing each portrait, I took a quick photo with my phone to keep track of my progress. Sorry for the blurry shots, for I did not allow the phone enough time to focus on some of them. Managed to document 41 of them, but my battery died by the time I completed the last four cartoon portraits for the evening.<br />

Early in the evening my actual sketching speed was closer to 20 portraits/hour, and as the evening progress we tackled a few more detailed guests and special requests that required a bit more time per portrait.<br />

Since got an upcoming summer camp on ninjas and dragons at the Art Center, decided to make a new pop-up card sample featuring a classic ninja and his Tengu master. The characters were sketched with a waterproof felt-tip pen, and the background card was penciled in.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18441984835" title="Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step" height="375" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/532/18441984835_1f17064866.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Used some watercolor pencils dry to add a bit of color to the background card.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/17821267883" title="Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step" height="375" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8788/17821267883_94c146af52.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Felt a more defined outline was needed, so I used a pigment pen to go over all the background elements to make them stand out more clearly. Also colored in the characters.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18254254390" title="Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8870/18254254390_5122f262f1.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
Finally used some "Yes" paste to glue the characters to their pop-up tabs. Make sure their bottom edge line up flush against the the base of each tab for smooth operation when opening and closing the pop-up card.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18254130368" title="Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step" height="500" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8888/18254130368_7615dc64ce.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
Another view of the finished card.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-10148632559529171482015-05-29T09:41:00.001-07:002015-05-31T08:08:16.037-07:00Art Activity Idea: Trying out the Studio Series Blank Book from Barnes & Noble<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/17545332063" title="image by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="image" height="480" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7759/17545332063_57465524a2_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
Found these <b><a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/home-gift-studio-series-blank-book/28709840?ean=9781441317360">blank books</a></b> at Barnes & Noble, and thought that they might make for a fine collaborative art project with my nephews. You could tackle it as a family project one rainy day and engage the writing and illustration skills of everyone in its completion. Once finished, you could put the protective clear plastic cover back on, and your new custom picture book would be ready to join the rest of your children's library.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/17962535929" title="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series" height="480" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8791/17962535929_2e1ec5b539_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
Drew a custom cover with a pigmented pen liner and colored it with with markers.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18163203335" title="image by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="image" height="640" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8832/18163203335_6a48462eb6_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />
Copic and Prismacolor markers worked fine on the hard cover material, but they will bleed through the interior pages a bit. It will be not an issue if you only draw on one side of each sheet, but if you do choose to color with markers you may want to use some protective absorbent sheets underneath the paper.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/17962551609" title="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series" height="480" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7794/17962551609_d30f62f3c0_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
Interior cover drawn on first page a fine pigment pen reflecting the kids interests and favorite animals. The "Series" component reflect what the kids see in their own reading books collections these days.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18149914101" title="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series" height="480" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7798/18149914101_c4f5363048_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
Pencil and pigment felt tip pens work just fine on the interior pages with minimal show through. since they are a pretty good thickness for drawing paper.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18148808065" title="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series" height="480" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8812/18148808065_8bcc61470b_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18145284322" title="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series" height="480" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7793/18145284322_11ba86339a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
Added a few graphic designs to opposing corners of two book spreads, so that the young ones may add additional doodles or text as they see fit.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18167092161" title="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series" height="480" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8862/18167092161_1012ee4474_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
While you could use any black pen for lettering and drawing, I would recommend choosing archival pigmented pens for their permanence and water-resistant qualities. That way you have maximum flexibility in your selection of coloring materials afterwards. Meaning you don't have to worry about smears and smudges once ink and lettering have dried, and you can use alcohol-based markers and some light water-based media..<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18028377699" title="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series" height="480" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7783/18028377699_4f1c8d0f8a_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
I like the brightness of the marker inks on the white paper,<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18049283940" title="image by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="image" height="640" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7741/18049283940_c6472f8e31_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
but they do seep through the page as shown above..<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18214670065" title="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Blank Book from Barnes & Noble - Studio Series" height="640" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8813/18214670065_148a3087e0_z.jpg" width="480" /></a><br />
Watercolor pencils will work dry or wet, but keep washes light to minimize warping of the paper. We plan to continue to work on further pages in an organic manner developing additional text and images simultaneously.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/17632040404" title="image by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="image" height="600" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8818/17632040404_cfa98561d2_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><br />
Naturally you could tackle it in a more organized and planned fashion, by writing and laying out each page before filling the actual blank book. Now go make your own picture book.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/18066920210" title="image by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="image" height="600" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7739/18066920210_423c4c1d0e_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><br />
Just a couple more coloring/sketching pages from the book. Some I started with some partial sketches for the kids, others were drawn on top of drawings the kids started. I colored parts of them with different hues to encourage the kids to use multiple colored pencils when coloring a given section.<br />

On occasion, I might be asked to draw a portrait from a picture. The challenge is that you really need multiple pictures to get enough visual data on a given subject. It was lucky that it had been school picture day, so we had plenty of references on hand.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16544087904" title=" by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt=" " height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7624/16544087904_abaf394078.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
Ideally, I find it more efficient to draw my cartoon portraits live with the subject present for a few minutes. Most sketches take 4-5 minutes to complete.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-64354020785457051612015-04-09T16:48:00.000-07:002015-04-09T20:25:44.593-07:00Fantasy Creature Design Saturday Workshop on April 11<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/17090678222" title="Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8767/17090678222_fb2975cb86.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
There are still some spots open in the Saturday workshop for April 11 at the Cary Arts Center. We will focus on sketching and illustrating some fantasy creatures from Japan and branch out from there.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/17090675742" title="Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7618/17090675742_0d86ef09a5.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />

Made these samples on watercolor paper with watersoluble graphite and a waterbrush. I choose to use my Caran D'AChe Museum leadholder loaded with a <b><span style="color: #4c1130;"><a href="http://robotninjamonsters.blogspot.com/2014/02/askew-taylor-pencil-finds-limited.html">Technalo 3.8 mm B lead</a></span></b>, but you could also use the <b><span style="color: #20124d;"><a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/caran-dache-technalo-water-soluble-graphite-pencils/">wooden pencil version</a></span></b>.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16905965689" title="Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7592/16905965689_2993c56102.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
The <b><span style="color: #20124d;"><a href="http://www.jetpens.com/Holbein-Waterbrush-Pens/ct/1846?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Product%20Categories&utm_term=holbein%20water%20brush">Holbein waterbrush</a></span></b> can also be handy for applying watercolors and blending watercolor pencils.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/17093137592" title="Chinese Zodiac Family by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Chinese Zodiac Family" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8795/17093137592_cb8053a7bf.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
If time allows we might even color some of the illustrations like this Chinese Zodiac family portrait.<br />

We have been doing more warm-up exercises on 3" X 3" Post-It notes in recent sketching classes, so I made these two sample sheets to use <a href="http://robotninjamonsters.blogspot.com/2015/03/post-it-note-sketches.html">as examples</a>.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-29188626728725499052015-02-20T12:02:00.001-08:002015-02-24T19:16:52.097-08:00Sketching on Sticky Notes<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/15973423833" title="Post-it note color sketches by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Post-it note color sketches" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7460/15973423833_df61b88d46.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
Found these sticky notes on clearance at the local Target, and remembered these <a href="http://toddnauck.tumblr.com/" style="color: red; font-weight: bold;">neat color sketches by comicbook artist Todd Nauck</a>. Thus a perfect opportunity for trying out a new art support just presented itself. It had never occurred to me to use such <a href="https://flic.kr/p/reZhDW">small format</a> for warm-up drawings, but that is why it is such a perfect choice. It is small enough not to take too much time to cover with any medium, and it is big enough to test different mix media combinations.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16592561882" title="Post-it note color sketches by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Post-it note color sketches" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7339/16592561882_4f3ef474d0.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
For this first test, I skipped the preliminary pencil sketch, and doodled a coloring outline with a fountain pen.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16406178100" title="Post-it note color sketches by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Post-it note color sketches" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8674/16406178100_208f3d4a46.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Colored it with Prismacolor alcohol-based markers.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16592007051" title="Post-it note color sketches by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Post-it note color sketches" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8565/16592007051_f550e1baee.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Tried some Copic opaque white for eye and hair highlights and outlining one side of the face.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16592008411" title="Post-it note color sketches by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Post-it note color sketches" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7390/16592008411_a3fc932a78.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Pretty good size for quick and easy color tests. Going to have to keep experimenting with other coloring tools as well.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16452506158" title="Post-it note sketch by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Post-it note sketch" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8662/16452506158_3fd71628dc.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />

At the very least, you can make some colorful stickers to brighten your work station.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16405980588" title="Post-it note color sketches by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Post-it note color sketches" height="500" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8674/16405980588_154ec23371.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
Also spotted these Yoobi green pencil cases that looked like miniature backpacks. They looked cute, and it was pretty cool to discovered that its cammo pattern was made up of toucan silhouettes. I did not like how cramped the small front pocket felt, and its zipper did not open wide enough to be useful.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1256814779395166520.post-79471547090870730342015-02-18T09:54:00.002-08:002015-02-18T09:54:35.878-08:00Expanded Palette and Test Mandala using custom squeezable acrylic paint markers<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16369901200" title="Acrylic Custom Squeezable markers color reference chart by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Acrylic Custom Squeezable markers color reference chart" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7365/16369901200_2fb753617c.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
Reloaded my original test markers and added a few more colors to our classroom set. This is the freshly painted reference chart.<br />

Found this stash of empty bingo bottles at the Art Center, so decided to fill them up with some acrylic paint and dilute them with some airbrush medium (1 part paint and 1 part airbrush medium) to make some paint markers for class use. To preserve the integrity of the acrylic emulsion decided to use only medium for increasing the flow properties of the paint. Diluting with water might result in spoiled paint if stored for long periods of time and a weak paint film.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/15747850304" title="I by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="I" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7457/15747850304_6f8f83699d.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Put them to the test with my 4 & 6 year old nephews.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16368561591" title="I by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="I" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7326/16368561591_4ab6e66ee4.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Bingo dotters are often used with Pre-K groups since they are quick and easy to set up with minimal clean up, but the width of the marks will be as wide as the dauber applicator.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16344316376" title="I by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="I" height="375" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8575/16344316376_2e31700021.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
They are a pretty good choice for Urban/Graffiti style pieces, and to cover wide areas quickly.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16369391532" title="I by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="I" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7364/16369391532_c79a8f7de7.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
If more control is desired, you will still need to resort to using traditional round brushes.<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16212549830/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe><br />
Just like commercial paint markers, I find it best to store these custom acrylic markers horizontally to facilitate remixing and prevent paint clogs.<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16213719159/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe><br />
Made this sample piece for class using a combination of dauber bottles and acrylic paint markers. Depending on the desired markes, they can prove an effective alternative to regular paint brushes.<br />

Tomorrow I have a half day camp with the theme of "Frigid Zones" at the Cary Arts Center, so I made this sample colored sketch on canvas board for show and tell.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16144954837" title="Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama" height="375" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8651/16144954837_47ffd5b94a.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Also cut some watercolor paper into pop-up diorama bases since they are such a natural fit for ice formations.<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/53818504@N00/16144953527" title="Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama by Alberto, on Flickr"><img alt="Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7514/16144953527_426acbbd54.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
Cut some penguins on card stock, and made a quick demo project without any coloring nor decorations. Will encourage students to color them and their background with <a href="https://flic.kr/p/qAF72x">some cool colors and perhaps add some snowflake patterns</a> to the background with silver paint markers.B2-kunhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431974279890454789noreply@blogger.com0
