New Sketchbook and couple of cartoon portraits from private class

Newest sketchbook cover for my upcoming art camps with couple of samples colored with Faber Castell Pitt Big Brush artist pens. Just wanted to have an example of the same image colored with "cool" and "warm" colors for comparison, and the Big brush format allowed me to do just that very quickly.

Got a couple of new students in my private classes. Thus naturally each got a customized cartoon of themselves as examples of how to draw people in my style.

Private Lesson Cartoon Portrait Gallery

While the students worked on drawing 4 different faces expressing different emotions, I took the opportunity to sketch each student during a private lesson today.

My new Kaweco clutch pencil performed well for the task with its soft 5B lead, and only needed to sharpen its point once after the first 5 portraits.

Just managed to document half of them in my phone.

Later in the day ended up drawing a few more cartoon portraits at a First Communion reception party. This time I used a Cretacolor Ecologic clutch pencil loaded with a soft Nero lead. This oil-based lead lays down deep dark marks that are pretty smudge-resistant, and can also yield some subtle shading just like a regular pencil. The advantage is that it's not messy, and its disadvantage is that it is not easily erased. The Kaweco lead pointer was still quite handy in restoring the sharp point to the blunt Nero lead.

An unusual example where I fit three siblings in a landscape format on a letter size card stock sheet. The longer barrel of the Ecologic leadholder is helpful when drawing longer strokes like while shading large hairstyles.

Cartoon Portrait Sketching Class at Cary Arts Center Photo Journal

During the last class in this week's track out camp at the Cary Arts Center, our creative students (6-10 years old) got to try a variety of sketching and coloring tools (like Chartpak Ad markers, Prismacolor colored pencils, Pentel Outline Markers, and Pentel Color Brushes). They worked on mini-comics, pop-up cards, and Artist Trading Cards (ATC) according to their preferences.

As part of my typical drawing demonstrations, every student got at least two cartoon portraits drawn to their specific requests (karate girl, butterfly girl, movie star, cheerleader, and ballerina). Each portrait was an opportunity to explain pen size selection and the typical steps taken to draw a cartoon likeness in a variety of settings.

Then the students had plenty of time to further customize and color them with the colored pencils, markers, and brush pens loaded with color dyes. Some students also took the opportunity to sharpen their drawing skills with the art materials at their disposal and created pop-up cards.

We finished the Art Camp with an exercise in visual storytelling by creating a classic 3-panel comic page assignment of two characters being taken by a Martian in an UFO to planet Mars that I learned at the last Durham Library Comics Fest. Nice work girls. Keep practicing your sketching and drawing skills!

Summer Art Camp Photo Gallery - Panda Drawing Activity

The Panda Drawing Activity worked smoothly with groups of kinders through 2nd graders at the Summer Art Camp in Immokalee earlier today. Just sharing the photo gallery of some happy kids with their ongoing projects.











Since several of the student groups were smaller than anticipated, I managed to speed sketch a few souvenir cartoon portraits for most of the camp participants and several classroom assistants. Keep sketching and drawing guys!
