Cartoon Sketching Demo in the Screened Porch at Bond Park

Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park
Spent 3 hours last night at "Bands, Bites, and Boats at Bond Park" in this screened porch area.
Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park
There was plenty of room, overhead fans, table space, light, and art supplies for whatever crowd of kids decided to indulge in artistic endeavors as the band played and others opted to row in the evening.
Cartoon Sketching event at Bond Park
Probably because of the lack of visibility, I had plenty of time to doodle some custom illustrations for coloring pages. For future events, we should probably put a bigger sign outside with sample pictures to entice more guests to come in.

Then in strolled Steve and asked if I could draw cartoon portraits of his party of six on a single sheet. Since I only had letter size card stock on hand, I drew him and his wife on one. their three kids on another, and their aunt on a third sheet. Happy birthday Steve! Glad I could brighten your family's evening.

Then this set of twins came in and had their portraits drawn while they colored some of the dragon coloring sheets I had on the activities table. Since they allowed me to choose, I drew one as a ninja and the other as a Jedi.

When i started to clean up, I offered them the pile of custom drawings I had made throughout the night to keep them busy until they can join us for some of the upcoming classes and camps at the Cary Arts Center. Also introduced the Center and passed brochures for ladies that stopped by to inquire about the nature our program for the evening. Thanks to everybody that stopped by.

Summer Art Camp Cartoon Portraits and Pop-Up Cards

Summer Art Camp 2016 - Aquatic Creatures
Just concluded a Summer Art Camp focus on "Aquatic Creatures" and another on "Merfolk and fantasy creatures". By the end of the week, we were all pretty much done with the "fish/underwater" theme. Thus students in the older group got a cartoon portrait each, some continue drawing, and others made pop-up cards.

Fantasy Creature Design Saturday Workshop on April 11

Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead
There are still some spots open in the Saturday workshop for April 11 at the Cary Arts Center. We will focus on sketching and illustrating some fantasy creatures from Japan and branch out from there.
Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead
Fantasy Creature Design with Caran D'Ache Technalo 3.8 mm Watersoluble lead
Made these samples on watercolor paper with watersoluble graphite and a waterbrush. I choose to use my Caran D'AChe Museum leadholder loaded with a Technalo 3.8 mm B lead, but you could also use the wooden pencil version.

The Holbein waterbrush can also be handy for applying watercolors and blending watercolor pencils.

If time allows we might even color some of the illustrations like this Chinese Zodiac family portrait.

Brush Alternative tool for applying acrylic paint: Empty Bingo Bottles with Dauber Tips

I
Found this stash of empty bingo bottles at the Art Center, so decided to fill them up with some acrylic paint and dilute them with some airbrush medium (1 part paint and 1 part airbrush medium) to make some paint markers for class use. To preserve the integrity of the acrylic emulsion decided to use only medium for increasing the flow properties of the paint. Diluting with water might result in spoiled paint if stored for long periods of time and a weak paint film.
I
Put them to the test with my 4 & 6 year old nephews.
I
Bingo dotters are often used with Pre-K groups since they are quick and easy to set up with minimal clean up, but the width of the marks will be as wide as the dauber applicator.
I
They are a pretty good choice for Urban/Graffiti style pieces, and to cover wide areas quickly.
I
If more control is desired, you will still need to resort to using traditional round brushes.

Just like commercial paint markers, I find it best to store these custom acrylic markers horizontally to facilitate remixing and prevent paint clogs.

Made this sample piece for class using a combination of dauber bottles and acrylic paint markers. Depending on the desired markes, they can prove an effective alternative to regular paint brushes.

Frigid Zones Samples

Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama
Tomorrow I have a half day camp with the theme of "Frigid Zones" at the Cary Arts Center, so I made this sample colored sketch on canvas board for show and tell.
Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama
Also cut some watercolor paper into pop-up diorama bases since they are such a natural fit for ice formations.
Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama
Cut some penguins on card stock, and made a quick demo project without any coloring nor decorations. Will encourage students to color them and their background with some cool colors and perhaps add some snowflake patterns to the background with silver paint markers.

Summer Camps are Over

Our Summer Art Camp term just concluded at the Cary Arts Center. Thanks for your participation and I wish you an interesting and  productive school year. Hope you continue to enrich your lives practicing and refining your art skills along the way. For those of you that developed an appreciation for sketching with leadholders, you might want to check the post below for shopping options. For a good source of Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens, I would recommend checking Blick's, Jerry's Artarama, or Askew Taylor since many of you seemed to enjoy drawing and coloring with their archival pigmented India inks during the cartoon sketching camps.

Cartoon Portrait Gallery of Students on Final Day of Clay camp

Friday Clay camp group
Today I subbed for a fellow instructor at the Cary Arts Center on the final day of a Clay camp, so we had the students work on custom comicbooks/sketchbooks, try their hand at folding ninja stars and boomerangs, and each student got their cartoon portrait drawn as a souvenir or for coloring it in class.

All the boys chose to de depicted as ninjas.

The girls went with fairy, forest ranger, mermaid, and the final request was for the sketch of a three-toed sloth (which /i did not get around to photograph).

Using Faber Castell Pitt Big Brush Artist Pens to color my Sketchbook sample for upcoming classes at the Art Center

Class Sketchbook
Using my feathered dragon serpent cover for the sketchbooks that we'll be using in the class and camps starting this week at the Cary Arts Center. Decided to prepare a colored sample to have on hand, so I chose Faber Castell Pitt Big Brush Artist Pens to get the job done in a flash. Their larger brush nibs and juicy pigmented inks can cover smooth card stock pretty quickly and uniformly. The colors remain pretty vibrant since the pigment sits on top of the card stock instead of being absorbed into it like conventional marker inks.
Pitt coloring
Coloring one of the internal pages printed on 20 lb multipurpose paper was a tad uneven, but still the Pitt inks remain on one side and did not bleed through the sheet.
Pitt coloring
When held against the light, the image can be seen through the back. Unlike water-based markers, the Pitt pens inks do not seep through and barely cause some warping on the page when applied a bit more heavily. Regular kids markers would saturate the paper with dye ink that would be visible on both sides and even bleed through several pages.
