Ninja Pop-Up Card Step-by-step (well sort of)

Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step
Since got an upcoming summer camp on ninjas and dragons at the Art Center, decided to make a new pop-up card sample featuring a classic ninja and his Tengu master. The characters were sketched with a waterproof felt-tip pen, and the background card was penciled in.
Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step
Used some watercolor pencils dry to add a bit of color to the background card.
Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step
Felt a more defined outline was needed, so I used a pigment pen to go over all the background elements to make them stand out more clearly. Also colored in the characters.
Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step
Finally used some "Yes" paste to glue the characters to their pop-up tabs. Make sure their bottom edge line up flush against the the base of each tab for smooth operation when opening and closing the pop-up card.

Cartoon Portraits from Photo and Live drawing

Untitled
On occasion, I might be asked to draw a portrait from a picture. The challenge is that you really need multiple pictures to get enough visual data on a given subject. It was lucky that it had been school picture day, so we had plenty of references on hand.

Ideally, I find it more efficient to draw my cartoon portraits live with the subject present for a few minutes. Most sketches take 4-5 minutes to complete.

Frigid Zones Samples

Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama
Tomorrow I have a half day camp with the theme of "Frigid Zones" at the Cary Arts Center, so I made this sample colored sketch on canvas board for show and tell.
Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama
Also cut some watercolor paper into pop-up diorama bases since they are such a natural fit for ice formations.
Frigid Zones- Penguin Diorama
Cut some penguins on card stock, and made a quick demo project without any coloring nor decorations. Will encourage students to color them and their background with some cool colors and perhaps add some snowflake patterns to the background with silver paint markers.

Private Lesson Cartoon Portrait Gallery

While the students worked on drawing 4 different faces expressing different emotions, I took the opportunity to sketch each student during a private lesson today.

My new Kaweco clutch pencil performed well for the task with its soft 5B lead, and only needed to sharpen its point once after the first 5 portraits.

Just managed to document half of them in my phone.

Later in the day ended up drawing a few more cartoon portraits at a First Communion reception party. This time I used a Cretacolor Ecologic clutch pencil loaded with a soft Nero lead. This oil-based lead lays down deep dark marks that are pretty smudge-resistant, and can also yield some subtle shading just like a regular pencil. The advantage is that it's not messy, and its disadvantage is that it is not easily erased. The Kaweco lead pointer was still quite handy in restoring the sharp point to the blunt Nero lead.

An unusual example where I fit three siblings in a landscape format on a letter size card stock sheet. The longer barrel of the Ecologic leadholder is helpful when drawing longer strokes like while shading large hairstyles.

Making an Army of Paper Robots

Given Mateo's interest in this Japanese cartoon about fighting robots, we decided to make some paper toys with 110 lb cardstock and the art supplies that we had on hand. The Cutter Bee Precision Scissors were particularly useful for making the standing cut outs and pop-up backgrounds.

Our standing cut out versions of the Tenkai Knights Titan mode. My nephew colored the base color with a yellow Crayola crayon, and I used some Caran D'Ache Neocolor II crayons to add some additional shades and brighter colors.

The good guys army was colored with markers and crayons. Notice the explosion cut outs and the red guy that can fly in his own Nakamura-lock paper airplane. Paper toys might be inexpensive to make, but they can still be plenty of fun.

The bad guys army was colored mainly with crayons. Our first batch below was particularly  monochromatic, but Mateo soon discovered how much better his creations looked once he took to coloring with multiple crayons.

Mark your calendars for the next Animazement Convention

While I managed to attend Animazement only on Saturday afternoon, I found the experience quite fun and inspiring. From the "How to Wear Hakama" panel and multiple anime viewing rooms to the multitude of creative costumed characters walking around the Raleigh Convention Center, I can't think of a more effective way to immerse yourself in the richness of Japanese pop culture often depicted in manga and anime. For fun, I sketched several cosplaying attendees as they walked by since you seldom get the opportunity to draw manga characters from life. Animazement is held on Memorial Day weekend, so it might be a good idea to mark your calendars for next year's convention.

Art Supplies on clearance found at Super Target

Just wanted to share this find with local readers that might shop in the Durham area.  The Super Target by the Streets at Southpoint mall have marked down their art supplies in their office supplies section, so it might be a good time to pick to pick a Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pen set for your sketching/coloring kits.

Manga Drawing Workshop at Cameron Village Regional Library

Somehow these pictures from a Manga Drawing Workshop held at the Cameron Village Regional Library back in October got lost in my stash of memory cards.  Thanks Nicole for inviting me, it was fun to talk about Manga, Japanese Pop culture, and sketching techniques with the teens of the Anime Club.  Special thanks to the generous folks from Jerry's Artarama in Raleigh that donated tons of art supplies for the kids to experiment with.  Attendants had a blast trying out and sketching with the different grades of graphite pencils and the set of SoHo colored pencils during the art engagement portion of the program.  I was also pleasantly surprised by the brightness of the colors and their fairly smooth lay down considering that they seem to be a student grade product.  I would highly recommend visiting the Raleigh store if you are looking for gift ideas for the creatively-minded in your lists.  I already picked up a few sketchbooks and visual journals from their wide selection to add to the gift bundles for my cousins and nieces.  They also carry the blister card with the full range of Faber Castell Graphite Aquarelle pencils and a paintbrush that make a pretty versatile sketching kit.

Sachiko Umoto Animal Drawing Hardcover Book

Thank you to all the parents and kids for your participation in the "Fantasy Creatures" class at the Cary Arts Center. It was nice to learn from so many of you how much the students enjoyed this initial drawing class, and look forward to seeing you again in upcoming classes. I will soon post a list of all my future "Manga Cartoon Sketching" classes and summer camps. For those of you already signed up for several classes rest assured that we can customize your individual sketching activities according to your interests and skill levels. Pictured above is the reference drawing book that I recommended to many of you: Sachiko Umoto's "Illustration School: Let's Draw Cute Animals"(you could also check for its hardcover version in the Barnes & Noble bargains section). Thanks again and keep on drawing!

First Teen Manga Sketchbook Class completed at Cary Arts Center

Just got back from teaching the first Teen Manga Sketchbook at the Cary Arts Center. We had a good turn out, and we had a fairly broad and productive introductory session with a group of boys and girls ranging in age from 11 to 15 years old. We went over some basic tips on constructing faces, drawing fighting figures, some animal drawing, designing zombies and spy characters wearing tactical vests. Every student got his or her face drawn to take home as a souvenir, some original sketches for practicing their inking technique, a dragon illustration, a vintage 3B pencil, and some handout sheets to further practice their sketching and coloring skills. We finished the session with a lucky draw for a handmade sketchbook from Neko Heavy Industries. All the completed class reviews were enthusiastically positive, so I look forward to offering similar follow up sessions where we can cover basic Kaiju/Creature/Dragon design and update some ninja and samurai characters with a sci-fi flair. Thank you to all the students that came to class today and keep on sketching!
Stay tuned for the next Manga Sketchbook class: As soon as we can schedule our next session, we'll let you know by e-mail when registration opens and announce it in this blog as well.
