Gallery of Cartoon Portraits from Birthday Party

Birthday Cartoon Portraits
Had the pleasure of drawing some ninja and princess cartoon portraits for a TMNT-themed birthday party held at the Kids Together Park this past weekend. Most boys wanted to be either a ninja or a dragon knight. The girls went with Harry Potter or Disney Princesses requests.

It took just a little over an hour to draw fourteen sketches with my trusty Sakura Pigma Sensei 06 pen.

Pop-Up Cards from Ninjas & Dragons Art Camp

Summer Art Camp 2015
We had a very talented group of students in our last Ninjas & Dragons Summer art Camp at the Cary Arts Center, so just wanted to share some of their original pop-up card designs.

Ninja Pop-Up Card Step-by-step (well sort of)

Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step
Since got an upcoming summer camp on ninjas and dragons at the Art Center, decided to make a new pop-up card sample featuring a classic ninja and his Tengu master. The characters were sketched with a waterproof felt-tip pen, and the background card was penciled in.
Ninja Pop-Up Card step by step
Used some watercolor pencils dry to add a bit of color to the background card.

Felt a more defined outline was needed, so I used a pigment pen to go over all the background elements to make them stand out more clearly. Also colored in the characters.

Finally used some "Yes" paste to glue the characters to their pop-up tabs. Make sure their bottom edge line up flush against the the base of each tab for smooth operation when opening and closing the pop-up card.

More Origami Ninja Stars

Just building up a stockpile of ninja stars for my nephew's upcoming ninja-theme birthday party.  After searching for "origami ninja star" and watching a few YouTube videos, finally figured out how to build the single-sided ninja stars and assemble them into a Double Ninja Star or a Super Shuriken or Ninja Star Frisbee.  Actually secured the back of the Frisbee with tape, so that it may be thrown repeatedly without falling apart.  For this batch of origami stars I used rectangular pieces of 24 lb color paper that measure 4.25" X 8.5" for each module.  The Super Shuriken above is made out of 7 single-sided shurikens joined together, and actually flies quite well.

Gathering some Goodies to Assemble Prize kits for Cartoon Sketching class contests

Time to start searching my storage bins and assemble a few prize kits for the drawing contests commonly held during my Cartoon Sketching classes in the after school program.
The white polypropylene slim pencil holders should make nice compact sketching kits. They are half the size of the regular pencil cases commonly found at retail and office supplies stores.
No idea how well the Spanish Paperchase neon erasers might perform, but I am fairly certain that they will be well-received by female students.
Squads of plastic ninjas ready for action. Actually plan to use them for drawing reference in upcoming lessons.

Ninjas at the Grocery Store

Check out what I found at a Publix grocery store in Lakeland.
"*Cough* *Cough* fresh air!"
"Finally, Freedom!"
"Check out my Power Ranger helmet".
Channeling his inner "Predator".
"You cover my back"
"Hmmpff, he looks to cuddly for a battle cat"
"By the Power of Greyskull!"
Yet, they can look pretty convincing in straight close ups and shots taken from a lower angle. Jungle mission.
"I sense danger"
Forward thrust attack.
Something above?
Reference shots taken from a worm-eye point-of-view.
For inexpensive plastic toys, this Ultimate Ninja Elite set works quite well as drawing reference models. Might want to consider something like this as a gift for the budding artists that still think that ninjas are cool which should include most 7-10 years old IMO.

Practice Cartoon Coloring & Sketching Assignment Sheets

While some of these practice sheets have been posted before, I figured I would list together all of the bonus sketch pages we have made available for students to take home and practice their budding creative skills after completing their Holiday Card decorating activities in the after-school special classes.
